Chapter 53 53 – Her Mother
"I know about that, sir." She replied. "A mare can use his victim\'s greatest fears as nightmare fuel. They can even drive their victims crazy from that."
I kept silent, pretending to wait for her answer. "Is that all you know?"
The doctor frowned. "Yeah, sir…. Is there anything else?"
"To discover the target\'s greatest fear, a mare must delve into his victim\'s mind." I put on a meaningful smile. "So, basically, a mare can read anyone\'s mind."
She widened her eyes and hissed. "You\'re offering your mare to read my mother\'s mind, sir?"
"You said your mother couldn\'t talk anymore, right?" I can notice a hint of curiousness on her face. "This is my payment to you for helping us."
Seeing her brow furrow as if she was in deep thought, I raised my hands. "Don\'t worry, I\'ll ask Szur not to dig into sensitive memories."
"I do want to know what my mother thinks." She looked at the door with teary eyes. "But…. Sorry in advance…. You are a demon, sir…. The first rule of dealing with demons is never to trust them."
I patted her shoulder, widening my smile. "Well, it\'s okay. But remember, you probably won\'t get this chance again anytime soon. After Szur recovers, I\'ll send him on a mission that might take a long time."
It was my way of telling Lexi to agree to this before her mother died but in an indirect way.
She squeezed her robe. Her eyes couldn\'t focus. I\'m sure her head was filled with doubts.
"Think about it, Doc." I continued. "What will we gain from tricking you? I really want to help you, but there\'s nothing I can do other than that."
Finally, she looked at me and asked. "If you don\'t mind, can you do it to me first? I…."
She choked, unable to continue her words.
"Ah, you want to convince yourself first. Well, that\'s fine. I\'ll have Szur dig into your memory."
***
This is very ironic. Lexi couldn\'t think straight after I persuaded her, so she let Szur read her mind. That\'s actually very risky. She is so vulnerable by sleeping on the bed like that.
If I want, I can do bad things to her easily.
The figure of Szur, who had been invisible for a few minutes, reappeared and descended from the doctor\'s chest.
"Doc, it\'s all done." I shook the woman\'s body.
It took a while for Lexi to open her eyes. She looked at me blankly, yawned widely, then sat down.
"Why did you wake me up?" She mumbled. "You said sir Szur would read my mind."
"He\'s already done it, Doc." I chuckled. Her gesture is like someone who just woke up in the morning.
"Ah." Then, she fell silent with her eyes barely open. "I see."
"Just say one thing you see in Doc\'s mind, Szur," I commanded the mare.
The little creature cleared its throat. "She likes to be completely naked when she works alone, my lord."
"That\'s fascinating." I nodded in amazement. "Then?"
Lexi widened her eyes, and her face turned red.
Szur continued. "She also likes to..."
"It\'s enough!" The doctor hastily covered the mare\'s mouth. "I believe in you!!!"
Seeing me and Ayre just staring at her, Lexi raved. "I did something like that without any tendencies! I just feel comfortable working naked! Not that I\'m an exhibitionist who likes to show off my private parts! I…. I…."
Seeing that the woman was on the verge of tears, I crouched in front of her. "Your secret will be safe with us. Now, let\'s go to your mother\'s place."
She wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, then nodded.
Ah, this woman\'s gestures made me even more attracted to her. Just like Xenora back then, Lexi also thrilled my heart.
I helped Lexi up, then moved to her mother\'s room. Szur climbed onto the old woman\'s chest, crouched there, then his form disappeared from view.
"He only need a few minutes," I told the doctor. "We just have to wait."
The woman repeatedly sighed as the process occurred. I knew she wouldn\'t be able to calm down in a situation like this. There must be a lot of things she wants to learn from her mother.
And finally, when Szur was visible again, the doctor approached that little creature. "What did you see…."
She choked when she saw a single tear flowing from the mare\'s eye.
I didn\'t expect something like that to happen, either.
"You had a wonderful mother, Doc." Szur descended from Lexi\'s mother\'s chest, speaking in a hoarse tone. "Even a demon like me can understand."
The doctor gulped. "W-what did you see in her mind, Sir Szur?"
"She just wanted to tell you this wasn\'t your fault." Szur had tears in his eyes again. "The cause of her illness isn\'t because you\'re interested in demonology."
Lexi\'s eyes welled up with tears. "Is that so?"
"She is indeed a little afraid of the path you choose. She still wants you to become a healer like her." Szur continued. "However, your mother just wants you to be happy, Doc. She\'s also happy to see you smile while studying demons."
Lexi walked to her mother\'s bedside. "That\'s why you never say anything about me reading forbidden books, mom? Is that also why you never scold me when I buy demons-related things?"
Lexi\'s mother remained silent and kept her eyes closed.
"I\'m sorry..." Lexi\'s tears grew more and more, even dripping onto her mother\'s blanket.
"I can feel her sincerity and affection for you, Doc." Szur wiped his tears.
Lexi fell to her knees. She buried her face into her mother\'s chest, continuing to cry.
I whispered to Szur. "I appreciate your initiative to act, Szur. However, you should have consulted me first. Your lies will be exposed if Lexi\'s mother wakes up, you know?"
The little creature looked at me. His eyes were still teary. "That was not an act or a lie, my lord. Everything that comes out of Szur\'s mouth is true."
Holy shit. You are full of surprises, Szur.
"All this time, Szur has always been digging into the bad side of humans. Only now have Szur discovered this." Szur looked at Lexi, who was still crying beside her mother. "Now Szur understands why you don\'t want to destroy the humans right away."
Oh, Szur. That\'s not entirely true.
