Chapter 255: Was This Justice Justified?

Chapter 255: Was This Justice Justified?

This was comfortable. There was no need to think about it. The pressure on his forehead increased and he opened his eyes slowly.

"No more," he said softly.

"It\'s fi—" Before she could finish, he pressed a light kiss on her lips.

"Rest." There was no room for argument. She felt the butterflies in her stomach start to scream and flutter about. She tried to ignore it, but it only grew worse when he pulled her into his arms. He moved her around until she was tightly pressed against his chest and his head was resting on top of hers.

She squeezed her eyes shut and slowly let the warmth take over.

Nothing new.

Just rest, he had said.

Okay, she would just rest.

For the next few weeks, life was back to normal. Mo Qingchen and her would have breakfast and go to work. Go through meetings, reports, and work from all their invested companies before getting off at six in the evening. Their kickboxing practice was not to be skipped. After that, they would shower and go home to enjoy the rest of the evening.

For the first two or three days after their honeymoon, they were so occupied with work that Qian Meng felt they needed a pact. "If there are no emergencies, we go to the office and come back together. And we always have our meals on time... together."

Mo Qingchen, the fellow stickler for rules saw his opportunity to feed Qian Meng on time and grabbed it with both hands. And therefore, their lives as harmonious partners continued.

Qian Meng was watching television one evening when the call came in.

She looked at the name on the screen and quickly took the call. "Uncle Bai," she breathed into the phone.

"Ah, Qian Meng, I am glad you picked up the phone." His voice was gruff and he sounded worn out. This worried Qian Meng greatly. She had spoken to Uncle Bai for a few minutes every other day but he always sounded so tired that it was getting worrisome.

"Uncle Bai, how have you been doing recently?" she probed softly.

"I have been doing well. Why do you ask?" he asked with a small chuckle.

"You keep saying that you are doing well, but it sounds like you are fighting a war. Is your health deteriorating? If that is the case, you can\'t hide it from me!" she spoke quickly.

"Ah, nothing of the sort. The medicines from the hospital and general exhaustion from all these years of work caught up with me. I have not worked for a month now. The doctor said that I will slowly regain my vitality," he promised.

Qian Meng wanted to take the man back to the doctor and pry for answers until she was satisfied but she knew she would be overstepping the boundaries.

"You are taking your medicines diligently?" she asked.

Bai Yu hummed. "At first, it was difficult without Chen Yue to figure out where everything was, but now… it\'s a piece of cake."

Qian Meng pressed her lips together. "How are things on that front?" she asked.

"The court hearings are going to begin in a few weeks."

Qian Meng raised her brow. "That seems excessive. Usually, cases take months to be brought to court, especially when the prosecution has information to pry from everyone involved. What happened?" she asked.

"They are fast-tracking all the processes. There seems to be pressure from higher authorities to wrap up the case privately."

Qian Meng didn\'t mind that. As long as Bai Ye Qing\'s name and crimes weren\'t splashed all over the news, it would be fine. She didn\'t want her investments tanking before she had a chance to evaluate and raise them. Moreover, once people found out, there would be no shortage of people who would come to make trouble for her.

The old bats from the Bai company were testament to that. She quickly realized who it could have been. And she tried to keep the smile away from her face.

"I see…" she trailed off.

"But that is not what I wanted to talk to you about."

Qian Meng sat up. "Uncle Bai, don\'t hesitate to tell me anything," she assured softly.

The older man laughed. "Oh no. I am not hesitating to tell you anything. I am actually inviting you to a funeral," she said quietly.

Qian Meng flinched. This must have been about Bai Wenxi\'s reburial.

"I see…" That was all she could say, she didn\'t know how to respond.

"Last time, Wenxi\'s funeral was held in a rush. We called everyone we knew but there was no closure. Now that the truth has been revealed, I want to bring the boy some peace," she informed her.

"Do you need any help booking the gravesite and commissioning the headstone?" She had not done it before but it was a hectic process. Most burial locations had strict regulations and high maintenance fees.

"Oh, no. I wouldn\'t want to inconvenience you with that," he said, choking up at her insistence. Even her own family hadn\'t offered to help, but this little girl was offering herself up so freely without any conditions.

"It\'s no inconvenience. I have already claimed that you are my uncle. It\'s now my filial duty. It\'s Wenxi my brother, then?" she told him.

Bai Yu felt a sob rip through his throat.

"Uncle Bai…"

"Oh no, kid. I am fine. Just happy that there is someone who I can consider family." He sniffed and seemed to wipe his tears away. "You don\'t need to worry about it. I have already spoken to the plot owners. I am shifting Wenxi to a better spot in the same burial ground. I already booked for it and made a new headstone. It just took a lot of time to process the papers for the police to release his body."

Qian Meng flinched. She wanted to beat herself up for letting this old man relive the grief of losing his son once again. All for her revenge? She didn\'t feel her justice was justified when she saw Uncle Bai in pain.
