Chapter 446: Sacrifice Out Of Love
Chapter 446: Sacrifice Out Of Love
Zheng Ren did not have much to do. He stood up and walked out to the corridor.
At the same time, the surgeon-on-duty also walked out with a perturbed look on his face.
It was already so late and everyone was reluctant to actually do their job at this hour.
The Internal Medicine Department wished that there were surgical patients, while the surgery department wished that they were internal medicine patients.
Zheng Ren smiled and said, “Go and rest for a while. I’ll handle it.”
The surgeon was immediately pleased. He thanked him and did not bother keeping up pretense as he returned to the on-duty room.
After a busy day, all the energy in his body had been drained. He could rest for as long as he could. There was no need for formalities.
A few minutes later, the sound of a stretcher trolley could be heard from one side of the corridor.
“How’s the patient?” Zheng Ren asked from afar.
“The patient overdosed!” The ambulance doctor limped forward as he pulled the stretcher trolley and hurried over.
Zheng Ren did not understand. Life was hard, but taking poison...
Before he could sigh, two stretcher trolleys could be seen.
Zheng Ren looked at the diagnosis on the system panel at the top right corner of his vision and was stunned.
For one of them, the system panel showed a faint green color, full of vitality. It was clear that he was not sick.
The other was a dark red, indicating that the patient’s condition was very serious.
What was going on?
Zheng Ren let the first stretcher trolley pass as he helped to send the second stretcher trolley into the Emergency Room.
“Chief Zheng, this is the patient who took the poison. The two of them took a bottle of sleeping pills and other drugs. The bottle is on this side,” the ambulance doctor said hurriedly. He took out a bottle and a few flat medicine boxes from the plastic bag in his hand.
Carbamazepine... Eszolam..
“What happened to your foot?” Zheng Ren asked.
“It was slippery. I twisted it while lifting the patient” the ambulance doctor answered immediately. “It’s nothing.”
Zheng Ren nodded. He looked at the two patients and saw that the nurse was preparing to save the man first.
“Don’t worry. The female patient is on ECG monitoring. Prepare to have her stomach pumped. Inform the Department of Digestive Medicine to come for a consultation.” Zheng Ren glanced at the medicine bottle and began to give out orders.
The male “patient” was about thirty-one or thirty-two years old. He was lying quietly on the stretcher trolley.
Zheng Ren judged from the system interface that he was fine. He just asked the nurse to take the time to put him on ECG to check his blood pressure to prevent any accidents.
The female patient, who was twenty-six or twenty-seven years old, had already developed an arch reflex. Her entire body was trembling non-stop, white foam flowing out from the corner of her mouth.
Zheng Ren picked up the flashlight and looked at her pupils. Both of her pupils had begun to dilate.
How much Carbamazepine had she taken?!
Carbamazepine was a drug used to treat epilepsy and manic depression. She had taken carbamazepine orally to commit suicide. She was really ready to die.
In the past, people had taken sleeping pills to commit suicide. Everyone thought that people who took sleeping pills died peacefully.
However, what most people did not know was that when people killed themselves by taking sleeping pills, what awaited them at the last moment of their lives was not peace and joy. At the last moment, they had to endure the pain of their internal organs burning like a raging fire for about half an hour. (Note 1)
However, their bodies were unable to move under the effects of sleeping pills.
It was undoubtedly the cruelest form of torture to feel such pain but be unable to move.
Because more and more people were committing suicide by taking sleeping pills, the concentration in sleeping pills had dropped to a terrifying level in the past decade. In other words, if they were to take sleeping pills now, they would definitely not die.
Patients who needed sedative treatment were all admitted to the hospital and given intravenous injections.
However, the patient in front of him had not only taken the drug Estazolam, but also a large amount of Carbamazepine.
He had to induce vomiting, gastric lavage, and drainage first. Whether this young female patient could be saved or not was still indeterminable.
“Call the ICU and ask if there are any empty beds.” After Zheng Ren began to induce vomiting and gastric lavage, the red color in the System’s panel did not decrease. Instead, it became a little redder. He knew that the patient probably needed to be put on a suction machine to help remove the poison. AT the same time, he might need blood to filter out the drugs in her body.
The Department of Digestive Medicine’s Chief Resident rushed to the emergency department. Seeing that Zheng Ren was there, she asked, “Chief Zheng, how’s the situation?”
“Not good. I think he needs to be sent to the ICU.” Zheng Ren sighed.
“What about him?” The Department of Digestive Medicine’s Chief Resident pointed at the male patient next to him and asked.
The vital signs on the ECG monitor silently reminded everyone that he was fine.
Zheng Ren did not say a word. He shook his head and walked to the ‘patient’. He used his hand to press on the upper left lateral edge of the pectoralis major muscle.
After pressing twice tentatively, Zheng Ren suddenly exerted force.
Pressing down here would instantly bring about a very strong pain. Zheng Ren pressed twice gently first in order to let the ‘patient’ think that he was fine.
Such a small trick was not worth mentioning.
“Ah! ” The ‘patient’ who was pretending to be dead on the flatbed suddenly jumped up. His right hand covered the left side of his chest, his face contorted in pain.
“You’re fine,” Zheng Ren said lightly. “Go outside and wait.”
Seeing Zheng Ren’s cold expression, the man felt guilty. He wanted to get off the stretcher immediately. However, he also felt that he needed to put on a show.
While he was hesitating, he heard Zheng Ren say, “Get a tracheal intubation kit. After intubation, send her directly to the ICU.”
He then saw the doctor pry open the woman’s mouth. The sputum suction tube then went in and suck away the white foam-like secretions.
A hard plastic tube went in.
The man’s Adam’s apple bobbed up and down. Just by looking at it, he knew that it was very painful and uncomfortable.
The tracheal intubation went in smoothly. For Zheng Ren, who was a master in emergency treatment, this was nothing.
The patient was rushed out and sent to the ICU with the help of an airbag.
“Are you not feeling well?” Zheng Ren walked to the male “patient” with a cold expression and asked.
The man was stunned for a moment. He saw Zheng Ren take another tracheal intubation kit. Zheng Ren was holding a sterile glove in his hand but had not torn it open yet. He hesitated and quickly smiled apologetically. “I’m fine, I’m fine.”
Dammit. Zheng Ren had already guessed the general situation from the state of him and the woman.
This was nothing but a sad story.
He did not know why the two of them had taken drugs to commit suicide. However, it was obvious that the man had not eaten anything. He had tricked the woman into taking Carbamazepine.
He was probably afraid that he would not be able to explain himself after the incident. When he saw that the woman had started to faint, he called for an ambulance, pretending that he had used up all his strength to open the door.
It was a pity that such a person did not take up an acting career.
With his acting skills, he could completely crush all kinds of acting newbies. He was practically a veteran actor.
It was a pity that the pain threshold of a veteran actor was not high. Zheng Ren was able to find out the truth quickly.
“Who are you to the patient?” Zheng Ren asked coldly.
“I... I...” The man stuttered.
A hint of disgust appeared in Zheng Ren’s eyes.
Even if he called the police, it would be useless. This kind of thing would occasionally appear in the emergency department. It would not happen very often, but it still did about once every two to three years.
Doctors were not judges or police officers. They did not have any right to judge people.
It was a pity.
Sigh.
...
Note 1: I haven’t studied this and heard it from a senior associate director. Anyway, there’s nothing you can’t get past. Besides, it’s normal for the emergency department to run into three or five people overdosing in a single night. The odds aren’t low.
