Chapter 148 - A SECOND CHANCE
He stared at the lady sharply, ignoring the pain in his bleeding palm. Not even for a second he darted his eyes away from the pregnant lady. He was worried if the lady would do something dangerous again.
"Let go of my hand, Kevin! I just want to avenge my husband!"
Kevin didn\'t budge as his hand still gripped the knife tightly. Jack still froze witnessing the scene before his eyes. It seemed that he didn\'t expect Kevin would appear to save him.
"I\'m the one who killed Andre, so please drop your knife!" Kevin suddenly exclaimed.
The sudden exclaim stunned both Julia and Jack. Jack widened his eyes at Kevin, while Julia gradually lost her grip on the knife. The lady\'s body weakened as she dropped her hand and automatically let go of the knife. She then cried again as she stared at Kevin in disbelief.
"You killed Andre? Why did you kill Andre, Kevin? He was your close friend!"
Kevin kept silent as he ducked his head lowly. "I\'m sorry, Jule. It\'s my fault," he whispered in a tone full of guilt.
Jack gawked at him in disbelief. "Kevin, you—"
"I\'m the one who killed Andre, so you can kill me if you want to, Jule," Kevin quickly cut Jack\'s speech as he handed the knife back to Julia.
Jack seemed to be more bewildered by Kevin\'s unpredictable act. He looked up at Kevin and saw Kevin\'s unfazed expression. The young scientist seemed so sure about what he was doing
The lady suddenly screeched and fell on her knees. She cried out loud again while clutching her head like a madwoman.
Kevin glanced down at her and sighed. He then threw away the knife and bent down to hug the lady\'s body. The lady cried in his warm embrace, channeling her emotions through her grip on Kevin\'s arm.
"You won\'t even dare to kill an ant, Kevin. I\'m not stupid to believe in your words!"
Julia continued crying in Kevin\'s embrace, and Kevin let her do what she wanted. He knew that the lady was still grieving over her husband\'s death.
"It\'s me, Jule. It\'s me who caused Andre to get killed," he replied as he looked up at Jack.
Jack was startled and nervously peered back at the young scientist.
Julia slowly pushed Kevin\'s body as she sat down on the green grass. She gazed at the grass blankly. "Why do you care about this nasty werewolf so much, Kevin? He had killed your colleague. Don\'t you hate him for what he had done?" She whispered weakly.
That was just a whisper, but both Kevin and Jack could hear it. They glanced at each other without saying anything.
"I hate him, Jule, and I still do," Kevin stated. He peered at Jack and saw the latter flinched in surprise. "But, hating him will not bring Andre back. It will only make my heart becomes heavy. I have to move on. It\'s not that I\'m going to forget Andre and act as nothing happened, but I just want to make Andre\'s biggest dream come true. You surely know what was his biggest dream, don\'t you?"
Julia was stunned, and she looked up at Kevin, who was smiling at her. It seemed that she was just struck by a sudden realization.
"Andre\'s dream..." She mumbled weakly. "Andre wanted to see this world free of tears, fear, and blood. He wanted to see a peaceful world like in Neverland."
Kevin smiled as he nodded his head. "That\'s why I decided to give Jack a chance, Jule. If I killed Jack, I would just soak the Earth with blood again. That\'s not something Andre wanted to see, right?"
Julia\'s body started trembling as she cried silently. She finally let her guard down, and the hatred on her face gradually diminished from her beautiful face.
Kevin lamented as he stared at the lady with his gloomy gaze. "I\'ll take you home, Jule. You need to take a rest. Just take a day off and have some rest at home," he suggested.
Julia shook her head weakly. "I\'ll just grab a taxi to go home," she replied as she got up from the ground.
Kevin helped her up as he said, "Let me call a taxi for you."
"No need, Kev," once again, she rejected the offer. "I can do it by myself. I\'ll see you around." She glanced at Jack for a moment before started walking toward the front gate of the orphanage.
Kevin and Jack gazed at the lady, who was staggering to the front gate.
"You okay, Jack?" the black-haired man asked the blonde one.
Jack turned to him and peered at his wounded hand. "Ask yourself that question. Go to the hospital and treat your wound there," he replied coldly.
"I just saved your life. Don\'t you want to thank me instead of acting cold to me?" Kevin responded jokingly. "I don\'t need to go to the hospital. I\'ll just ask Blue to treat my wound."
"Blue is not around. She had left to school since dawn to prepare a school festival or something," Jack explained as he took the knife from the ground.
"Then, I need to bother you to treat my wound."
Jack stopped his movement when he heard Kevin\'s words. He turned to Kevin and stared at him with his wide eyes. Kevin was also staring at him with an unreadable gaze.
Jack was astonished. It looked like he didn\'t know what to say to the other man, and he just started walking to the orphanage building. Kevin sighed as he followed the tattooed man to the building.
Kevin sat down on the sofa in the living room, while Jack only walked past the room and went somewhere. The tattooed man went back to the living room with a bowl of water, a clean cloth, and a first aid kit.
"I don\'t know how to treat a wounded hand. Moreover, the smell of blood is seducing me. What if I lost control and eat you alive?" Jack asked as his hands started opening the first aid kit.
"I trust you, Jack," Kevin replied. "I said that I would give you a chance, didn\'t I?"
Jack was startled again and stared at Kevin in surprise. The other man looked very earnest and honest when he declared.
Jack fell silent as he damped the clean cloth into the water and started cleaning Kevin\'s wounded hand. He did it seriously and tried not to press the wound with too much strength.
"I think you need to get some stitches. The wound is deep, and a bandage is not enough to stop the bleeding," the tattooed man spoke again.
After finished cleaning the wound, Jack opened the first aid kit and took cotton. He then opened a bottle of alcohol and poured the liquid into the cotton. He carefully dabbed the cotton to the wounded palm.
"I\'ll go to the hospital later," Kevin answered as he hissed when the alcohol made contact with his bleeding palm.
"You dared to grab the knife when you no longer have the healing power. Are you out of mind?" Jack asked in a frustrating tone.
Kevin chuckled before he answered, "I don\'t want to see you die, and I also don\'t want to see Julia become a killer."
Jack\'s hand movement paused as he looked up at Kevin. "Why did you give me a second chance so easily? I had killed your close friend, and I know that you still hate me. Why did you so easily trust me after what I did to you and the people around you?" He asked in a serious tone.
The scientist looked up at him and fell silent for a moment. But he then drew his gaze away as he answered, "I don\'t want to see anyone die. It\'s enough to lose a close friend, and I don\'t want to lose another friend."
Jack was surprised once again. "You... do you see me as your friend?" He asked in disbelief.
Kevin turned to Jack again as he smiled. "I have been wanting to be your friend since we were still kids, Jack. Don\'t you remember how I constantly tried to approach you back then? I even gave you my favorite toy car, but you threw it away. My heart was hurt back then," he answered.
Jack still stared at Kevin. His breath hitched, and he didn\'t know how to reply to the other\'s words. He then just shifted his gaze away and continued to treat Kevin\'s wound. His hands trembled slightly, but he didn\'t say anything.
"Jack," Kevin called out the other\'s name again. "You killed Andre because of me, didn\'t you?"
Once again, Jack\'s movement halted upon hearing Kevin\'s question. He didn\'t dare to look at Kevin and just stared at the floor.
There was a long pause in the living room. None of them was speaking after Kevin asked a question to the other man. Jack just silently bandaged Kevin\'s wound.
After the wound was completely bandaged, Jack sighed and finally looked up at Kevin. "Andre said something about you before he died, Kevin."
